What is Semaglutide?

 

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. This means it mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which is released in your digestive tract when you eat. It can prompt your body to make more insulin, which lowers your blood sugar. Semaglutide reduces your appetite by signaling a feeling of fullness in your brain.

You've probably heard of Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus, all manufactured by Novo Nordisk.  Semiglutide is the compounded version of these drugs.

What is a compounded drug or compounding pharmacy?

​

A compounded medication is a custom medication made just for you.  A compounding pharmacy is a specific type of pharmacy.  They make medications for people who have certain medication needs or requirements

 

Is Semaglutide approved by the FDA for weight loss?

On June 4, 2021 the US Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide (specifically it's brand name versions) injections for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.

How are Compounding Pharmacies able to make Semaglutide?

When a drug is in shortage, compounders may be able to prepare a compounded version of that drug if they meet certain requirements in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.  As of May 2023, Ozempic and Wegovy are both listed on the FDA's Drug Shortages List.

Can I get semaglutide via Telehealth?

Yes, or you could visit your Primary Care physician.  On-line providers can do everything via telehealth.  Many of them will schedule pre-testing at a lab convenient and near you, then ship medications directly to your home.

• Gastrointestinal disease or gastroparesis

• Type 1 diabetes

• Patients under 12 years of age

• Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Can I take HRT and Semaglutide together?

Yes.  Due to the hormonal changes associated with menopause, semaglutide is particularly effective for effective and sustained weight loss in middle-aged and menopausal women.

Do I have to have a doctor's prescription to get semaglutide?

​

Yes.  It's important to have a professional medical specialist monitor your medical history and continuing progress while on HRT and semaglutide.

What does semaglutide cost?

In some cases, your insurance may cover the cost of the medication, but if you find it doesn't, expect to pay about

$200-399 or more per month.

How do you take semaglutide?

​

1.  There are two forms of semaglutide: oral and injection.

​

2.  Take oral semaglutide once a day with a small glass of water (no more than 120mL) at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or other oral drugs of the day. Swallow the tablets whole, do not cut, crush, or chew.

​

3.  Take semaglutide injection once a week by subcutaneously (just under the skin) of the upper arm, abdomen or thigh. The injection should be taken on the same day each week at any time of the day. Your doctor will teach you how to inject the medicine.
