How Fast Will I Lose Weight on Semaglutide?
If you are not familiar with Joi Women's Wellness, you should be. Keep reading.
I've been on semaglutide since the 3rd week of March, so about 8 weeks so far and I've lost 11 pounds.
I'm a 57 YO woman in menopause, so anything that can assist and help me lose weight, specifically at this pace, I'm all in!
I have found that as the weeks progress, the dosage seems to build on top of the week before in that I'm less hungry and find I can't eat as much as the week prior. For me, it diminishes my appetite, it causes me to feel full faster and I stay full longer. All of these impact the actual amount of food I'm taking in, therefore I'm losing weight.
What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic. Think of Semaglutide as the generic version of these two name-brand drugs.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 Peptide. GLP-1 is a Glucagon-like peptide. A peptide is a string of molecules called amino acids, which are the "building blocks" of proteins. Peptides are basically short proteins that are about 2-100 amino acids long.
We all have GLP-1s in our bodies. These are naturally occurring hormones which are released from our gut after we eat. The function of GLP-1s is to boost the amount of insulin our bodies make to keep our blood sugar within a normal range, as well as provide the sensation of fullness after a meal. The same effect on insulin regulation and appetite happens when GLP-1 receptor agonists are injected into our bodies.
Can you lose weight on semaglutide without dieting?
Yes, I believe you can. The medicine does the work for you. It decreases your appetite, prevents you from eating as much and keeps you full longer. I have found I don't really have to diet or restrict myself from food because I just really don't want to eat most of the time. I also don't think about food as much.
How do you lose weight on Semaglutide?
Eat less: Semaglutide targets GLP-1 receptors in the brain, helping to regulate appetite and reduce food intake.
Feel fuller: It mimics a natural hormone called incretin, which increases feelings of fullness.
Combine with healthy eating and exercise: Long-term use of semaglutide, along with a healthy lifestyle, can lead to sustained weight loss and improved metabolic health.
Does Ozempic cause muscle loss?
If you are a woman over 50, it's likely that you have already begun to lose some of your muscle. This is called sarcopenia and is a natural part of aging.
What causes Sarcopenia:
Immobility, including a sedentary lifestyle
Unbalanced Diet
Inflammation
Severe Stress
Semaglutide's effect on your appetite could play into number two. It's difficult enough to eat a good diet, with adequate protein when you have a normal appetite, it's a whole new story if you barely have an appetite.
How to combat muscle loss while on Semaglutide
You'll want to follow the same rules you'd follow if you were told you had Sarcopenia while taking semaglutide. Only really even more religiously.
For people who have been diagnosed with sarcopenia, they'd be given some lifestyle and exercise advice. You'll want to do the same while using semaglutide to lose weight or you may find you lose as much muscle as you lose fat.
Find a good Resistance Training program to follow and do this three-times per week.
Explore Fitness Training exercises like riding a bike or hiking to raise your heart rate. This should be done about five-times per week.
Walking can prevent and even reverse sarcopenia, and it's an activity most people can do for free, anywhere they live.
Will Semaglutide work for me?
The bottom line is yes, you can lose weight pretty quickly on semaglutide so you must be diligent in making resistance training, fitness training and walking an everyday part of your life along with your weekly semaglutide injections.
For menopausal women, adding semaglutide to an HRT, Hormone Replacement Therapy routine might be exactly what the doctor ordered to lose those last few pounds.
According to Menopause Solutions' February 2023 article, Semaglutide and Weight Loss, "Due to the hormonal changes associated with menopause, semaglutide is particularly effective for effective and sustained weight loss in middle-aged and menopausal women."
This drug is amazing at helping us lose weight, we need to do our part and be amazing with our lifestyle changes, so we don't find ourselves looking like a smaller, saggier version of ourselves at the end of our weight loss journey.
