Why Using Telehealth may be the future and a viable option for Hormone Replacement Therapy

Back in the good 'ole days, like before 2020, if I wanted to talk to my primary care physician about starting Hormone Replacement Therapy, I'd have to call her office schedule an appointment and go see her in person. Probably 1-2 months out. Then during our time together, she'd likely ask me about my symptoms, review my medical history and then if she was comfortable and willing to consider prescribing any meds, she'd require that I go have bloodwork done. That would take another week.

Two to three weeks after the blood tests come back, I'd have a follow-up appointment and that's when the real fun would begin. At this point, it could be 8-12 weeks since I started the process with still no meds prescribed, and no relief from my symptoms. If she was inclined to prescribe a cocktail of hormones, whether that be conventional hormones or bioidentical hormones, they would still need to be picked up at my local pharmacy or sent via UPS directly to my home once they were manufactured. Once I start the meds, the expected time for them to begin to make a difference and for me to find some relief of my symptoms is two weeks to three months.

I don't have the patience for a process that takes this many steps and takes this much time. I can't speak for you, but when I decide I want to do something, I want results. Like immediately. Are you the same?

Hurdles of traditional Doctor Visits for Hormone Replacement Therapy

What is a HRT Doctor, what to look for?

Medical Credentials

Ensure that the provider is a licensed healthcare professional with the appropriate medical credentials. Verify that the provider has experience and expertise in hormone replacement therapy.

Telemedicine Compliance

Confirm that the online provider complies with telemedicine regulations and laws in your state. Check if the provider requires an initial in-person consultation which might be a legal requirement in some areas.

Patient Reviews and Testimonials

Look for reviews and testimonials from other patients who have used the services.  This can provide insights to the provider's reputation and patient satisfaction.

Privacy and Security

Verify that the online platform follows strict privacy and security measures to protect your personal and health information.

Customization of Treatment Plans

For BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) inquire about the customization of treatment plans, based on individual hormone needs.  Understand how the provider tailors' treatments to your specific health needs.

Transparent Pricing

Ensure that the pricing structure is transparent and clearly outlined.  Be aware of any hidden fees or unexpected charges.

Communication Channels

Evaluate the communication channels available for interacting with healthcare professionals. Look for platforms that offer secure messaging, video consultations, or phone calls.

Pharmacy Partnerships

Check if the online provider works with reputable pharmacies to ensure the quality and safety of medications.

Follow-Up Monitoring

Inquire about the provider's follow-up procedures and monitoring of treatment.  Regular check-ins and adjustments to the treatment plan may be necessary.

Educational Resources

A reliable provider should offer educational resources about hormone replacement therapy, potential side effects, and lifestyle considerations.

State Regulations Compliance

Confirm that the provider adheres to state-specific regulations governing hormone therapy and telemedicine in your location.

Insurance Coverage

Check if the services are covered by your insurance plan, and if not, understand the costs involved.

Patient Support

Assess the level of patient support offered, including access to healthcare professionals for questions or concerns.

HRT Options: Unlocking Telehealth Hormone Therapy

Gone are the days of being at the mercy of your doctor's schedule and thank goodness for that. Today, with the various online HRT and BHRT providers you are able to book appointments within days of reaching out. The options on how we obtain our Hormone Replacement Therapy have vastly improved.

The convenience factor when it comes to a telehealth visit for Hormone Replacement Therapy and choosing to work with a specific doctor and practice are numerous. Should your provider of choice request that you get pre-testing bloodwork, they have relationships with testing facilities like LabCorp and Quest that allow you to pay the doctor's office for the testing, they order the tests on your behalf, and you show up for the blood draw. The results are then sent to your doctor prior to your visit so they can be discussed in detail with your provider along with conversations around the meds she may want to consider prescribing for you.

Telehealth is empowering individuals to take control of their hormone journey in a more convenient and personalized way. As we look forward, continued collaboration between healthcare providers, testing facilities and patients is crucial in unlocking the full potential of telehealth for HRT. This revolution enhances the patient experience but also paves the way for a more accessible, efficient, and patient-centered approach to Hormone Replacement Therapy and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
